The short answer

Driver licences are issued by each state and territory, not federally. Update yours with your state road authority, such as Service NSW, VicRoads or Transport and Main Roads in Queensland.

Bring your marriage certificate or change of name certificate. Most states want you in person, because they take a new photo on the spot.

1 Find your authority

One authority per state, not a national one

There is no single driver licence body. You update yours with your own state or territory road authority, for example Service NSW, VicRoads or Transport and Main Roads in Queensland.

The table further down has the direct page and phone number for all eight.

2 What to bring

Your certificate, your licence, and any extra ID

Bring your marriage certificate or change of name certificate from Births, Deaths and Marriages, your current licence, and any extra identity documents your state asks for.

  • Proof of name change: your marriage certificate or change of name certificate.
  • Current licence: hand it in, or bring it along for the record.
  • Extra ID: only if your state's identity check asks for it.
3 How it happens

Most states update you in person, with a new photo

Most road authorities want you at a service centre in person, because they take a new photo on the spot. Some allow part of the process online, but check your state's page first.

4 What follows

One visit updates more than just your licence

Your new licence is issued in your new name, and becomes accepted photo ID everywhere else, banks included.

  • Vehicle registration is the same record, so ask them to update it in the same visit.
  • Boat or marine licence varies by state: Victoria and Queensland handle it at the same counter, Tasmania sits with Marine and Safety Tasmania, and the Northern Territory has no recreational boat licence at all.
  • Everywhere else, from your bank to your gym, now accepts your licence as easy proof of your new name.
5 If your state has a form

Four states publish a form. Powered fills it in

Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia and Queensland each publish an official change of name form for your licence.

On the Powered plan, we fill in everything we already hold, so it arrives ready to sign. Elsewhere, we give you the exact steps for your state instead.

Your state

Who to go to, state by state

There is no national driver licence. The name change goes through your own state or territory road authority. Each of the eight trades under a different name. Here is the direct page and the number for yours.

driver licence name change questions

Your questions, answered

Straight answers to what people actually ask about changing their name on their driver licence.

How do I change my name on my driver licence in Australia?

You update your licence with your state or territory road authority, such as Service NSW, VicRoads or Transport and Main Roads in Queensland, usually in person, taking your marriage certificate or change of name certificate as proof.

Can I change my name on my licence online?

It varies by state. Some road authorities allow part of the process online, while most require an in-person visit so they can verify your proof and update your photo ID.

Is there a fee to change your name on your driver licence?

Many states reissue a licence with a name change at little or no cost, though some charge a card fee. Check your state road authority for the current amount.

Why should I change my driver licence first?

What proof do I need to change my licence name?

Your official marriage certificate or your change of name certificate from Births, Deaths and Marriages, plus your current licence and any extra identity documents your state requires.

Can Surname Switch fill in my driver licence form for me?

Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia and Queensland each publish an official change of name form for your licence. On the Powered plan we fill in everything we already hold, so it arrives ready to sign. In other states the update happens in person or online with the road authority directly, so Surname Switch gives you the exact steps and any message you need instead.
