The short answer

Visit any CommBank branch in person with your original legal documentation. This covers a new surname after marriage, reverting to a former name, or a brand new name.

A staff member witnesses your new signature. All your accounts, debit and credit cards are updated in the one visit. New cards are posted to you at no charge.

1 Where to go

A branch visit, not the app

Changing your legal name with CommBank is done in person, at any branch. No appointment needed, just walk in.

  • Married: taking a new surname.
  • Reverting: going back to a former name.
  • Brand new name: changing to something different.

NetBank and the CommBank app only let you nickname accounts. They can't change your legal name. There's no online shortcut here.

2 What to bring

Original documents only

Bring original legal documentation showing your new name. CommBank accepts:

  • Marriage certificate from Births, Deaths and Marriages
  • Change of name certificate
  • Revised birth certificate
  • Divorce order

A ceremonial or celebrant certificate is not accepted, so leave that one at home.

Going back to a previous name? Bring original documents showing both your current and previous name.

3 At the counter

One visit updates everything

At the branch, a staff member witnesses your new signature. Every account, and all your cards, update in that one visit.

New cards in your new name post to you free of charge. The whole bank is done in one visit.

4 What is separate

Home loans, CommSec and your title

If you have a CommBank home loan, the same branch visit updates it too. Your loan terms, interest rate and repayments are unaffected.

The property title is separate: a legal step through your state land titles office, usually via a conveyancer.

CommSec share trading is also separate, with its own form:

  • Form: Change of Personal Name (CSL1031).
  • Covers: every Individual and Joint account linked to your Client ID.
  • Send: a certified copy of your proof, never the original.
  • Unchanged: your Client ID and account numbers.

Where CommBank fits in your name change

Do your photo ID first. A driver licence in your new name makes every bank visit simpler. Your plan puts CommBank in the money phase, after your ID and government updates.

The same order works for every bank; see our bank-by-bank comparison.

Married in Australia? Your marriage certificate is proof, no separate legal step (see our marriage guide). Going back to a former name? See our divorce guide. Choosing a brand new name? See our deed poll guide.

CommBank is one stop of many. Surname Switch builds one ordered checklist with your real bank, super fund such as AustralianSuper, and energy retailer such as Origin Energy. It fills forms where one exists, including CommSec's CSL1031, and drafts AI messages elsewhere.

For a branch visit like CommBank, your plan gives a short checklist of what to bring and say.

CommBank name change questions

Your questions, answered

Straight answers to what people ask about changing their name with Commonwealth Bank.

How do I change my name with Commonwealth Bank?

Visit any Commonwealth Bank branch in person with your original legal documentation, such as your marriage certificate from Births, Deaths and Marriages or your change of name certificate. No appointment is needed. A staff member witnesses your new signature, all your accounts and debit and credit cards are updated in the one visit, and new cards are posted to you at no charge.

Can I change my name in the CommBank app or NetBank?

No. NetBank and the CommBank app only let you nickname your accounts. Changing your full legal name, whether after marriage, when reverting to a former name, or to a new name, is done in person at a Commonwealth Bank branch.

Do I need an appointment to change my name at CommBank?

No. You can walk into any Commonwealth Bank branch to change your legal name, with no appointment needed.

What documents does Commonwealth Bank need for a name change?

Original legal documentation: a marriage certificate issued by Births, Deaths and Marriages, a change of name certificate, a revised birth certificate, or a divorce order. A ceremonial, commemorative or unregistered marriage certificate is not sufficient. If you are reverting to a previous name, bring original documents showing both your current and your previous name.

Does CommBank charge for new cards after a name change?

No. All your debit and credit cards are updated in the same branch visit, and new cards in your new name are posted to you at no charge.

Can I change only my preferred name with CommBank?

Yes. To update only a preferred name, not your legal name, you can call Commonwealth Bank on 13 2221 instead of visiting a branch. No documents are needed for a preferred name.

Does changing my name at CommBank update my home loan?

Yes. Updating your legal name at a CommBank branch updates your home loan along with your other accounts, and your loan terms, interest rate and repayments are unaffected. Changing the name on the property title itself is a separate legal step through your state land titles office, usually handled by a conveyancer.

Does changing my name at CommBank update my CommSec account?

No. CommSec is updated separately with its own Change of Personal Name form (CSL1031), which covers every Individual and Joint CommSec account linked to your Client ID. Return it with a certified copy of your proof of name change, never the original. Your Client ID and account numbers do not change. CommSec is on 13 15 19.
